Travel Smart! China history is more than dynasties.

A brief intoduction to China   (MAP)

"China" was derived from the ancient term "Zhina" or "Jina" (支那). The name was first used on southern China and was used in various writings as old as the Tang Dynasty. Westerners and outsiders used it under English as "China". However, encyclopedias have a slightly different version that it was derived from Cina or Sina, a Persian name dated back to Hebrew language.

China history has more than 23 dynasties, and over hundreds of countries evolved and vanished. People of China originated from many countries coming from different ethnics and tribes throughout these periods. During the Han Country (HanGuo 汉国), 2214 to 1788 years ago, many Asian ethnics came to form the Han nationality. The term "Han" first appeared in Southern Shaanxi, and then later in Sichuan and Yangtze River areas. It was adopted as a Nationality name, which later dissolved. China's civilization was further strengthened by the development of a common writing system and came to be known as "Han Zi" (汉字) or "Guo Zi" (国字) that bridged the gaps between many local languages. Subsequently, different ethnicities of China were mixed for a long time. Those who were part of the "later Han" historical era go by the name "Han", and most people of China became Han. Others who did not assimilate completely into newer Han nationality maintained their own names, which make up the ethnic minorities.

Mong is a mysterious ethnic minority in China who came to associate with the name Miao (苗) over the last several hundred years. Known as Miáo in many books in the past, they call themselves Mong and other same terms with different accents that were written as "Meng, Mo, AMao, Hmu, Hmong," etc. The two closest terms to Mong are Meng and Hmong. Meng is and was the Han language pronunciation of Mong. Hmong was derived from the French term H'Mong. During the French colonization period in Southeast Asia, the term H'Mong was used to document the Mong. Many Mong adopted it and referred to themselves as "Hmong". All the terms above are refering to the same people.

Mong was officially grouped under "Miao" as one of Chinese ethnics during 1950s. During the turn of the 21st century (recently), educational centers began to educate people that Miao was Mong's ancestors had led many Mong to accept the name "Miao".
