Forbidden City is no longer forbidden. It is located in the heart of Beijing, a place occupied by many northern royals in the past. Beijing was under many names, and was known as Dà Dù (Mong: Nǎ Dù) during the Yuan Dynasty. Forbidden City is situated in the old Yuan Imperial City, which was burned to the ground during the begining of Ming Dynasty as the capital was moved to Nanjing. Later, Beijing was made the capital of China again under Chu Ti or known as the Yongle Emperor, and the Forbidden City was re-build at the Yuan Imperial City. The city was prohibited to civilians except officials and royals. It was open to the public after it became a national Museum in China. The palace city has survived 980 buildings and over all about 9000 rooms, which were mostly constructed during the Qing Empire. Inside, you will get to see the structure and architecture of the city and how it functioned. There are also many ancient arts and artifacts to see. |
